Peru: Ex-spy chief sues Spanish judge

LIMA, April 26 (UPI) -- Peru's former spy chief is suing a Spanish judge for libel in a corruption scandal that brought down the Peruvian official, El Comercio reported Tuesday.

Vladimiro Montesinos is suing Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon for $20 million over allegations of corruption the judge made in his new book "A World Without Fear."

In it, Garzon writes about Montesinos' alleged efforts to bribe a Peruvian opposition politician ahead of the 2000 elections.

The Spanish judge has pursued a number of Latin American leaders over the years, including former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet on charges of human rights abuses during his regime (1973-1990).

The scandal over Montesinos' bride -- caught on videotape -- prompted then President Alberto Fujimori to flee the country instead of facing corruption charges and prison time.

Montesinos was arrested and condemned to 15 years in prison. He still faces additional charges that could lengthen his term.
