Asia-Africa summit builds economic ties

JAKARTA, April 24 (UPI) -- The Asia-Africa summit ended Sunday with what organizers say was a historic deal to build economic and politics ties between the two continents.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told the 80 leaders gathered at the summit in Jakarta the agreement was a milestone, the BBC reported.

He said the new Asian-African Strategic Partnership is committed to meeting internationally agreed targets for economic growth and poverty alleviation, as well as terrorism and organized crime.

With China's rapid economic expansion, its demand for imports of raw materials has been a boom for several African countries, from Sudan to Sierra Leone, officials said.

Japan announced during the summit it will double aid to Africa continent over the next three years.
