Mexico City mayor may face arrest

MEXICO CITY, April 20 (UPI) -- The Mexican attorney general's office Wednesday told a judge to issue an arrest warrant for the mayor of Mexico City, El Universal reported.

The judge now has 10 working days to decide whether to order Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's arrest. Lopez Obrador has been charged with being in contempt of court, after Congress voted April 7 to strip him of his immunity.

Lopez Obrador has been the frontrunner in polls for the 2006 presidential election as a candidate of the left-leaning Democratic Revolutionary Party, but if he is jailed he could be barred from running.

Lopez Obrador has charged President Vicente Fox and his National Action Party took up the case against him to knock him out of the presidential race.

The mayor enjoys widespread support in the capital, and thousands have turned out to protest the case.
