Four charged in Italian banker's death

ROME, April 18 (UPI) -- Four people have been indicted for the 1982 hanging death of Italian banker Roberto Calvi, known as God's banker because of his ties to the Vatican City.

Businessman Flavio Carboni and his ex-girlfriend Manuela Kleinzig, along with Pippo Calo and Ernesto Diotallevi have been charged in Calvi's death, reported the BBC Monday.

Calo and Diotallevi are believed to have ties to organized crime, according to Italian news agencies.

Calvi was found hanging under London's Blackfriars Bridge with bricks and $15,000 in his pockets. He had left Italy while on bail after being convicted of corruption.

There had been an initial inquest that determined Calvi had committed suicide, but the verdict was quashed and the case had remained open.

London and Italian authorities reopened the investigation last September.

The four are scheduled to go on trial in October.
