DeLay asks Senate GOP for patience

WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Embattled House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has appealed to Senate Republicans for support as he fends off attacks on his political ethics.

The powerful Texas conservative told reporters following the Tuesday meeting his message was: "Be patient. We'll be fine."

DeLay addressed the Senate GOP's weekly policy lunch after weeks of mounting allegations of ethical misconduct related to overseas trips paid for by lobbying interests amid ongoing investigations and indictments of several of his political associates.

Following calls for him to better explain his conduct for the sake of the party by a couple of GOP senators, DeLay reportedly said the party must fends off the Democratic conspiracy to bring him down, citing the work of liberal billionaire George Soros and the grass-roots group MoveOn.org, because it threatens the party's agenda and mission.
