Toronto braces for transit strike

TORONTO, April 9 (UPI) -- Toronto's public transit workers are threatening to walk off the job Monday as their union presses for a better contract.

The Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents 8,400 employees, hs rejected offered pay hikes of 2.75 percent, 3 percent and 3.25 percent in a three-year contract, the CBC reported Saturday.

A strike Monday would leave hundreds of thousands of people scrambling to find ways to get to work and severely impact the city's economy.

An estimated 1.3 million people use public transit in Toronto each workday.
