Joan Kennedy fights guardianship

BARNSTABLE, Mass., April 9 (UPI) -- The alcohol-fueled collapse of Joan Kennedy in Boston has pitted the ex-wife of Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., against her three children.

Barnstable Probate and Family Court Judge Robert Terry ruled Friday Joan Kennedy is a danger to herself and incompetent, a source close to the case told the Boston Herald.

The judge made a 90-day extension to give her children custody over her finances, healthcare, housing and other personal decisions.

Joan Kennedy, who suffers from alcoholism, took the stand in court to fight against her children -- U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., Edward Kennedy Jr. and Kara Kennedy Allen -- from keeping control of her life.

Terry set a trial date to decide whether that guardianship should be made "permanent" and "irrevocable."
