U.N. envoys: Reforms achievable

UNITED NATIONS, April 6 (UPI) -- One of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's four envoys for his plans to reform the United Nations say they are committed to his "bold but achievable" agenda.

Getting the envoys to U.N. World Headquarters in New York so soon after last week's launch of the proposals reflects determination to get momentum behind them, Annan's Chief of Staff Mark Malloch Brown said Wednesday.

He introduced Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern and former Indonesian foreign Minister Ali Alatas to reporters.

"While the recommendations are bold, we also believe that they are achievable," said Ahern.

Their appearance came just two days after announcement of their appointment, along with former President Joaquin Chissano of Mozambique and former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo.

All four were to travel to world capitals to seek support for the reforms.

Annan has bundled the proposals to be accepted as a whole, not as an "a la carte" menu.

The proposals include expansion of Security Council membership and replacement of the Geneva-based Commission on Human Rights by a more focused body.

The agenda is to be taken up at a summit beginning Sept. 16.
