Akayev resigns as head of Kyrgyzstan

MOSCOW, April 4 (UPI) -- Askar Akayev resigned Monday as president of Kyrgyzstan during a brief meeting at the Kyrgyz embassy in Moscow, Itar-Tass reported.

Some media outlets, however, said that Akayev, ousted last month in a coup that drove him and his inner circle to flee to Moscow, had yet to officially resign and intended to do so only after addressing the central Asian's Parliament in a remote broadcast from Russia's capital.
