Drug suspect shoots Florida couple

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., March 31 (UPI) -- Deputies say a man broke into a New Smyrna Beach, Fla., home and killed a couple he believed had turned him in on drug charges and then killed himself.

Volusia County investigators said David Edward Johnson broke into a home and shot Aeneas Hernlan, 29, and Julie Hernlen, 31, the Daytona Beach News Journal reported Thursday.

They were discovered by their 5-year-old daughter Monday, who called 911 and described the scene to dispatchers. Julie Hernlen died immediately and Aeneas Hernian died Tuesday night.

Deputies said Johnson, 33, killed himself at his Swan Drive home after the shootings Monday.

The investigators said Johnson shot the Hernlens because he thought they had turned him into law enforcement when he was arrested and charged with growing marijuana and possession of steroids.

The Hernlens had nothing to do with Johnson's arrest, the deputies said.

The couple had asked for an injunction against Johnson in January, but a judge denied it. The couple said Johnson was stalking them by driving by their house and making threats.
