German's World War II diary to go public

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 25 (UPI) -- The personal diary of a German justice official who spoke against the Nazi party during World War II will go on display in Texas for the first time.

The diary of Friedrich Kellner will be on display April 1 through May 30 at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University in College Station to mark the 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

Kellner's grandson, Scott Kellner, a retired Texas A&M professor, translated the 753-page diary that documents his grandfather's outspoken criticism of the Nazis. He was beaten and threatened with imprisonment in a concentration camp.

Kellner's grandfather gave him the diary in 1968, two years before his death at the age of 85, with the condition it would be used as a weapon against anti-democratic forces.

Friedrich Kellner witnessed many acts identical to the terrorism of today, his grandson says, and his diary offers many lessons applicable in the current war against terrorists.
