80 gunmen killed in attack west of Baghdad

BAGHDAD, March 23 (UPI) -- Iraqi forces attacked a training camp for suspected insurgents west of Baghdad, killing 80 gunmen in one of the largest operations to stamp out terrorism.

An Interior Ministry source said Wednesday seven soldiers were killed and dozens of others were wounded in the operation, which continued more than seven hours in Boheiret Tharthar, near Tikrit, the hometown of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

He said Iraqi forces took over the camp following a fierce battle in which the troops were backed by U.S. warplanes and helicopters.

On Tuesday, Iraqi policemen killed 17 gunmen in the northern city of Mosul following an abortive assassination attempt on a police officer in the city.
