Lebanon protesters slam U.S. interference

BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 22 (UPI) -- Hundreds of protesters demonstrated Tuesday outside the U.S. embassy north of Beirut against U.S. interference in Lebanon's domestic affairs.

Security forces cordoned off the embassy building in the neighborhood of Aukar as the demonstrators waved Lebanese flags and shouted slogans such as "America get out of Lebanon."

The protesters also burned the U.S. flag and carried a picture of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with the words: "Lebanon will being you death."

The demonstration was organized by pro-Syrian leftist political parties and Hezbollah.

The protest was on the eve of the arrival in Beirut of U.S. Assistant Deputy Secretary of State David Satterfield who reportedly will stay in Lebanon for several weeks during the absence of Ambassador Jeffrey Filtman.
