BAGHDAD, March 16 (UPI) -- Outgoing Iraqi President Ghazi al-Yawer told the newly elected National Assembly all Iraqi factions should participate in the political process.
"We are all responsible before our people. There is no loser or winner. We either win the battle together or we lose it together," Yawer told the assembly at its first session.
Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said all Iraqi factions should contribute to drafting the country's new constitution.
The head of the majority Shiite bloc, Abdel Aziz Hakim, called for the formation of a strong government to speed the trial of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and ensure public services to the Iraqi people.
Three explosions rocked Baghdad Wednesday as the National Assembly met in the heavily fortified "Green Zone," 45 days after holding Iraq's first post-Saddam elections.
Many roads leading to the Green Zone, where the U.S. army headquarters and key government buildings are located, were closed as well as bridges connecting that area with other parts of Baghdad.
