Howard: abortions too easy in Britain

LONDON, March 13 (UPI) -- British Conservative Party Leader Michael Howard says abortions are too easy to obtain in Britain and should be limited further.

Howard told Cosmpolitan magazine, in an interview to be published Monday, that women are able to get abortions "on demand" -- a popular phrase among abortion opponents who said legal safeguards to prevent frivolous abortions are being ignored, the Observer reported Sunday.

"I believe abortion should be available to everyone, but the law should be changed," Howard said. "In the past I voted for a restriction to 22 weeks, and I would be prepared to go down to 20."

Howard's comments followed debate over whether abortion laws should be changed now that premature babies are able to survive at earlier ages.
