Hughes tapped for White House return

WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- Long-time advisor and friend of U.S. President Bush, Karen Hughes, will reportedly be back to help promote his second-term agenda.

The Washington Post quoted unidentified sources as saying Hughes, however, would not be a formal member of the White House staff.

Hughes, viewed as once the most powerful woman to ever work in the White House, resigned as counselor to the president in 2002 citing family reasons, but continued to advise him on communications strategies from her Texas home.

She also got involved with Bush's re-election campaign.

The White House has not commented on the report and Hughes was unavailable.

The Post said Hughes would help with foreign policy -- presumably including Bush's push to spread democracy in the Middle East.

Hughes could also pitch in with the campaign for Social Security reform, the central item in Bush's second-term domestic agenda.

Hughes is a former television reporter and executive director of the Texas Republican Party. Often described as Bush's alter ego, she first worked with him in his first run for governor of Texas in 1994.
