DNA links suicide to Lefkow killings

CHICAGO, March 11 (UPI) -- DNA from a discarded cigarette butt has linked a disgruntled cancer survivor to the killings of the husband and mother of a Chicago federal judge.

Police spokesman David Bayless said the Illinois crime lab had matched DNA recovered from the cigarette butt at the crime scene to DNA of unemployed electrician Bart A. Ross. Ross, 57, committed suicide during a traffic stop in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis Wednesday afternoon and a letter and .22 caliber bullets were found in his van.

"The DNA match, with other evidence, certainly convinces us that Ross is the offender in the Lefkow family homicide," Bayless said.

Authorities stopped short of declaring the case closed.

Supporters of jailed white supremacist Matt Hale, whose name was linked to the slayings of attorney Michael Lefkow, 64, and Donna Humphrey, 89, say Hale is owed an apology. Hale was convicted of soliciting the murder of Judge Joan Lefkow and is scheduled to be sentenced next week.
