Spanish Muslims issue bin Laden fatwa

MADRID, March 10 (UPI) -- The Spanish Islamic Commission announced a fatwa against Osama bin Laden a day before the anniversary of the Madrid train bombings.

The Times of London reports that the commission's pronouncement encourages imams to condemn terrorism at Friday prayers. The commission also issued a document thanking the Spanish people and government for refraining from "disproportionate" anti-Muslim measures in the wake of the bombing.

The rush-hour explosions on trains approaching Madrid's Atocha Station killed 192 people and injured thousands on March 11, 2004. Islamic groups who claimed ties to bin Laden's al Qaeda, took responsibility for the attack.

Spanish authorities are holding 22 suspects and another seven blew themselves up to avoid arrest, killing a police officer as well.

Most of the suspects are from Morocco. King Mohamed VI plans to attend a memorial mass in Madrid on Friday as a gesture of solidarity with the victims.
