Draft wants McInnis for Colo. governor

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., March 10 (UPI) -- Colorado Republicans have former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis' permission to start a draft movement in advance of the state's 2006 gubernatorial race.

A small group met with the six-term ex-congressman Monday to gauge his interest, the Grand Junction (Colo.) Daily Sentinel said Thursday. Former Colorado Secretary of State Natalie Meyer said she had "every assurance he intends to run."

McInnis, who retired from Congress in 2004 and is now with a Denver law firm, is a proven vote-getter in the critical swing areas of western and southern Colorado, Meyer said.

Meanwhile, a Web site domain name that U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., could use in his own gubernatorial bid was registered by a staffer who worked on his 2004 re-election campaign.

The campaign's office manager has registered beauprezforcongress.com, the Rocky Mountain News said.

The current governor, Republican Bill Owens, is term-limited and cannot seek re-election.
