TEHRAN, March 1 (UPI) -- Iranian President Mohammed Khatami expressed deep concern Tuesday over continuing instability in neighboring Iraq.
The Iranian News Agency quoted Khatami as saying "developments on the Iraqi scene and the state of instability plaguing Iraq over the past two years constitute one of our deepest worries."

He said, "The rise of a democratic and united Iraq suits very well our national interests and national security."
Khatami stressed, however, "Security not only implies the end of military threats but it is also related to achieving development in the region."
