Another stay granted in Terri Schiavo case

CLEARWATER, Fla., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Florida Circuit Judge George Greer has granted another stay until Friday afternoon for a Florida woman who is being kept alive with a feeding tube.

Greer's original stay was to expire Wednesday, but he ruled in Clearwater he wanted an extra 48 hours to consider the case of Terri Schiavo of the Tampa Bay area.

Bob and Mary Schindler, the woman's parents, are asking for a stay to allow them to appeal to higher courts. They appeal has already been denied by the Florida Supreme Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to consider the case.

Schiavo, 40, collapsed from a chemical imbalance 15 years ago and suffered brain damage. Courts have consistently ruled Schiavo is in a permanent vegetative state.

Michael Schiavo claims his wife had told him that if she became dependent on artificial devices, she would want them removed.

The Schindlers don't believe she ever made such a request.

Michael Schiavo has been seeking legal permission to remove the feeding tube for five years, and the Schindlers have been fighting him.

At one point, Gov. Jeb Bush succeeded in preventing the removal, but he said Wednesday there wasn't much more he could do.
