Sinn Fein hints IRA may be behind heist

MADRID, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams suggests the Irish Republican Army may have been behind the bank raid that has threatened the Northern Ireland peace process.

The IRA and Sinn Fein, the paramilitary group's political wing, have consistently denied responsibility for the $48 million robbery of Belfast's Northern Bank in December.

However in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Sur in Madrid Wednesday, Adams said he could be "wrong" to believe the IRA's denials.

"No one knows who robbed the bank except the robbers themselves," he said. "An opinion has been given that the IRA was involved and the IRA has said it was not and I believe them, but maybe I'm wrong."

The refusal of Sinn Fein and the IRA to acknowledge responsibility for the crime has led to a crisis in the political process. The IRA withdrew their offer of permanent disarmament over the issue earlier this month.
