Hariri probably killed in suicide bombing

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Lebanese Interior Minister Suleiman Franjieh said an initial investigation indicates former Premier Rafik Hariri died in a suicide bombing.

Franjieh told a Tuesday news conference in Beirut: "Semi confirmed information indicates that a car had approached Hariri's convoy, then exploded, which means that a suicide bomber carried out the attack.

"We have 70 percent probability that it was a suicide bomber," Franjieh added.

He said the mastermind behind the attack is an international party and an enemy of Lebanon.

"Such big and spectacular crimes are difficult to uncover and this act was obviously aimed at inciting strife in Lebanon," he said.

Franjieh warned "we are on the verge of the abyss" and the existing divisions and tension in the country are similar to conditions that existed on the eve of the outbreak of civil strife in 1975.
