Bay Area firefighter electrocuted

LOS GATOS, Calif., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Officials Monday investigated the apparently accidental electrocution of a firefighter during a four-alarm blaze in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Santa Clara County Fire Captain Mark McCormack died Sunday shortly after a live power line apparently melted and fell from the roof of a burning home in Los Gatos.

McCormack, 36, had been promoted to captain in December and was among the first responders to the blaze. He was the first member of the Santa Clara County department to be killed in the line of duty.

The San Francisco Chronicle Monday said the sheriff's department and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were called in to investigate because a firefighter had died and not because criminal activity was suspected.

Grief counselors were made available to McCormack's fellow firefighters.
