NYC jury convicts lawyer in terror case

NEW YORK, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A New York jury has convicted a lawyer for an Islamic terrorist of a felony, resulting in her being immediately disbarred.

Lynne Stewart was convicted Thursday on all five counts of aiding Islamic terrorism by smuggling messages out of jail from her terrorist client and lying to the government when she pledged to obey federal rules that barred her client, Omar Abdel Rahman, from communicating with his followers.

The legal case against Stewart began in April 2002 with an indictment, the New York Times said Friday. The trial lasted more than seven months, and the jury deliberated 12 days over four weeks.

Stewart, who vowed to appeal her conviction, remained free on bail but may not leave New York State. Sentencing was set for July 15. She faces as much as 30 years behind bars.

Rahman is serving a life sentence for inspiring a thwarted 1993 plot to bomb the United Nations, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels and other New York landmarks.
