Hutchison hires campaign help

DALLAS, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, has hired two nationally known political advisers for a statewide campaign, possibly a run for Texas governor.

Terry Sullivan, a campaign manager, and Scott Howell, a media advisor, have been hired, The Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

There has been speculation that Hutchison will oppose Republican Gov. Rick Perry in the GOP primary next year. She could also run for re-election to the Senate.

Sullivan most recently ran the successful campaign of Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. Howell has worked for the Bush-Cheney campaign, as well as those of five other GOP senators.

Luis Saenz, campaign manager for Perry, said he would not read anything into the new hires.

"She's got a re-election race coming up in '06, so there's no surprise that she's putting together a campaign," Saenz said.
