Denmark likely to vote back center-right

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Denmark is likely to vote back center-right Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen to power Tuesday based on his economic policies, the BBC reported.

According to opinion polls, Denmark's government and its anti-immigrant Danish People's party ally, are set to win Tuesday's election by a comfortable margin.

The Social Democrats, the main opposition party, are forecast to suffer heavy losses among the country's 4 million eligible voters.

The healthy economy is expected to help Rasmussen at the polls, with this year's economic growth forecast at 2.4 percent, mirroring last year's.

Also contributing to the coalition government's popularity is the fact the government has slashed asylum-seeker numbers from 12,512 in 2001 to 3,222 in 2004, the Financial Times said. The recognition rate -- the proportion of asylum applications that succeed -- has plummeted from 53 percent to 10 percent in the same period.

A Gallup poll Monday night gave the ruling coalition 98 of parliament's 179 seats, against 77 for the center-left parties, the BBC said.
