SUMY, Ukraine, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko pledged Monday to uphold freedom of the press in his country, Interfax news agency reported.

The newly-elected, pro-Western Ukrainian president is in favor of signing an agreement between the media and government that would ensure freedom of the press, Interfax said.

"I am ready to formalize these relations to a level that would satisfy our journalists," Yushchenko told journalists.

He noted that in such a document, the government will have to certify that "it will never persecute the press and will never conduct a policy of misinformation, incomplete information or untimely information through the media," Interfax said.
