U.N. chief eagerly awaits oil-food report

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Awaiting Thursday's report on the Iraq Oil-for-Food program, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan says his organization is ready to improve itself.

The Independent Inquiry Committee, headed by former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, was to deliver an interim report expected to be critical of how the United Nations handled the program.

"We will study (the report) and implement its recommendations," Annan told reporters at U.N. World Headquarters in New York Wednesday. "Obviously there will be some harsh judgments on some of the things that we have done in this organization."

He added, "We ourselves are taking measures to strengthen some of our management practices and we will be making some announcements and taking some concrete action very soon."
