Court compensates Indians for jail term

STRASBOURG, France, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- The European Court of Human Rights has condemned the Czech Republic for imprisoning two Indian men for 30 months.

The court awarded Balbir Singh and Bakhschisch Singh each over $6,000 in damages, the BBC reported Wednesday.

The two Indian citizens were arrested in 1996 for helping others cross into the Czech Republic illegally. They were sentenced to 21 months imprisonment and ordered to be deported, but were only released from detention in 2001.

The court said the Czech government had acted unlawfully.
