Voter registration now GOP's fulltime job

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The Republican Party has announced plans for a permanent, year-round U.S. voter registration program.

Newly elected Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman said the effort would also include the identification of non-aligned voters who can be turned out to vote for Republicans on Election Day.

"We want to continue to find additional Republicans and conservatives as well as black and Hispanic voters and improve on the technology to do that," Mehlman told the Washington Times in an exclusive interview published Tuesday. "The object is not to rest on our laurels but do better in elections this year and next," said Mehlman, who will lead the RNC for at least the next two years.

At the weekend meeting of the American Association of Political Consultants Mehlman, who led the operations of the president's 2004 re-election organization, was named "Campaign Manager of the Year," following in the footsteps of White House counselor Karl Rove, who won the award four years ago for his work on Bush's 2000 campaign.
