Terri Schiavo's parents seek attorney

CLEARWATER, Fla., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The next step in the case of Terri Schiavo of Tampa, Fla., will be a hearing to determine whether a guardian should be appointed.

Courts have ruled Schiavo, 40, has been in a permanent vegetative state for 14 years.

The Supreme Court refused Monday to consider allowing an appeal by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to order doctors to keep using the feeding tube that is keeping her alive, The Miami Herald reported.

Her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, are trying to keep their daughter alive. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, said if she were conscious she would prefer to be left to die. He has been trying for more than five years to get the tube removed and so far has won every important legal battle.

The Schindlers will argue in a Clearwater court Friday a lawyer should be appointed to represent Terri Schiavo's interests.

They are also asking for a rehearing by a Lakeland, Fla., appeals court on the rejection of their argument that Pope John Paul II has declared euthanasia is a sin and the pope's decision should be applied to their daughter's case.
