Better police-traveler relations sought

ATLANTA, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Police assigned to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will undergo human relations training.

There has been a lot of friction between police and the public due to security rules banning curbside parking outside the terminal, a problem at many airports, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

Police Chief Richard Pennington and airport General Manager Ben DeCosta met to discuss ways to improve the relationship between officers and travelers and decided to better train officers on dealing with the public.

"I want to get human relations training for everyone at the airport. A lot of this is common sense," Pennington said.

There have been a number of complaints from airport patrons, including one in November that was backed up by a surveillance videotape.

It showed an off-duty officer working at the airport dragging a woman from her car and slamming her to the ground before handcuffing her. The officer said the woman had slammed the car door into him.

Charges against the woman were dropped and the incident was still under investigation.
