Spain's bishops denounce condoms

MADRID, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Spain's Roman Catholic bishops are confirming their fidelity to the Vatican's prohibition against condoms after one of their spokesmen hinted otherwise.

The bishops' conference spokesman, Juan Antonio Martinez Camino, said publicly that "contraception has a place in the context of the integral and global prevention of AIDS," the Washington Post reported Thursday.

That galled the Vatican and prompted Spain's bishops to issue a disclaimer.

"It's not true that the Church has changed its doctrine on condoms," the bishops said. "It is impossible to advise the use of condoms," because according to Catholic teaching, "condom use implies immoral sexual conduct."

The bishops said they promote education in favor of "faithful conjugal love" to avoid "risky situations."
