Jeb Bush proposes tax cut in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, following his brother's lead, is advocating tax cuts in his new state budget.

In his budget message, Bush called for $300 million in tax cuts, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

The cuts included eliminating a tax on alcoholic beverages sold in bars and restaurants, providing for a nine-day sales-tax holiday for clothes and school supplies, and cutting in half the state tax on stocks and bonds owned by investors.

Florida has no personal income tax.

The cuts were part of a $61.6 billion budget announced Tuesday in Tallahassee.

"This is a common-sense budget," Bush said. "It is based on sound conservative principles. It will allow the needs of our state to be met but done in a way that doesn't mortgage off our future."

The tax cuts were reminiscent of income tax cuts proposed by President Bush and implemented by Congress. The president is now trying to make those cuts permanent.
