Portland nabs alleged 'prolific' ID thief

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Detectives in Portland, Ore., Friday announced the arrest of a "prolific" identity-theft suspect as he allegedly tried to hack into a payroll database.

The Police Bureau said they seized stacks of counterfeit and blank check stock, computers and identity profiles on more than 200 individuals during their investigation of Brent Gordon.

Police said in a statement, detectives from the Regional Economics Crime Investigation Center concluded Gordon was "a highly sophisticated and prolific forger."

It was not clear if Gordon had actually used stolen identities; however police said he had been trying to break into the payroll database in Portland. The owner of the database was not identified.
