CHATHAM, England, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Britain under Labor is experiencing the greatest economic growth and stability in generations, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Thursday.
He said this prosperity is the reason Labor should win the as-yet-unscheduled elections, expected to be held in May.
He cited record levels of employment, a healthy welfare state, low interest rates and regeneration of public services as examples of Labor's determination to help "not just the elite at the top but the hard working families who are the backbone of the country."
Liam Fox, co-chairman of the Conservative Party, told the BBC Blair had been selective with his figures. Blair had promised not to raise taxes and yet had done so 66 times since his election in 1997, Fox said.
Liberal Democrats Treasury spokesman Vince Cable told the BBC Labor's complacency on the economy would lead to longer-term problems as the party is ignoring issues such as rising consumer debt and spending deficits.
