Reeve fan passed on to N.H. teen

CHARLESTON, N.H., Dec. 25 (UPI) -- The black 2001 Ford van that belonged to deceased "Superman" Christopher Reeve has been given to the family of a Charleston, N.H., quadriplegic teenager.

Dana Reeve, Christopher's widow, chose 14-year-old Tyler Howard's family out of more than 70,000 who requested the van be passed on to them after Reeve's death, the Charleston Union Leader reported.

Howard's family said the van will allow him to do things his condition made difficult.

"Like visit family and go with friends to the movies," said Howard's mom, Sheri Hamel.

Howard was three when a virus attacked his spine and left him without the use of his arms and legs.

The spacious van includes a lift and special ties to keep Howard's automated wheelchair from moving around during the ride.

Christopher Reeve played Superman in the 1980s movie series. He became a quadriplegic after a horse-riding accident 10 years ago. Earlier this year, he died from a bedsore-related infection.
