S.Korean military hit by promotion scandal

SEOUL, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- South Korea's military prosecutors said Friday they have found evidence that army officers were involved in a promotion scandal.

Two lieutenant colonels have been arrested on charges of illegally changing documents to help army colonels win promotions to general, military prosecutors said at a press conference.

The lieutenant colonels selected 52 out of 1,151 candidate colonels and doctored documents to make sure they were promoted to brigadier general in early October, said Kim Seok-young, the military's chief prosecutor.

Prosecutors will seek an arrest warrant for an army brigadier general and a colonel for involvement in the promotion scandal, Kim said.

He vowed to continue an investigation to determine whether the accused were acting under instructions from superiors, referring to Army Chief of Staff Gen. Nam Jae-joon.

The scandal was the latest blow to South Korea's 650,000-member military, which confronts North Korea across the world's most heavily fortified border.
