Cleared shooting suspect sues Detroit

DETROIT, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- A former suspect in a deadly shooting spree at a fireworks display is suing Detroit for $100 million, claiming officials tried to frame him.

Daron Caldwell spent 99 days in jail on $100 million bail before the charges were dropped. His lawyer told the Detroit Free Press the amount named in the suit was matched to the bond set by a judge after police claimed Caldwell was a multimillionaire.

"They used lies to get a warrant," Marlon Blake Evans said. "They used vigor to try to convince the public they had the right person. The entire investigative report was a fraud."

The suit names the city, Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings and 17 other officials.

As thousands of people gathered in Hart Plaza for fireworks June 23, bullets started flying. Nine people were wounded, including one who later died.

Caldwell was arrested almost immediately based on witness identification. But some victims said police had the wrong man, and Caldwell was later cleared by DNA and ballistics tests.
