Russian strategic missile hits target

YASNY, Russia, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A new Russian strategic missile hit its target in a successful test firing Wednesday, Interfax news agency reported.

A Voyevoda heavy intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from a pad in the Orenburg region and successfully hit a training target at a range on Kamchatka Peninsula, 3,600 miles away, the commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, Col. Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov, told Interfax.

"The successful launch confirmed the principal technical characteristics of the missiles, which account for a significant share of the Strategic Missile Forces potential," Solovtsov said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is using some of his government's profits from soaring global oil prices to upgrade Russia's Strategic Missile Forces with a new generation of weapons.
