Castro's grandaughter becomes U.S. citizen

MIAMI, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A granddaughter of Cuban President Fidel Castro has been sworn in as a citizen of the United States in ceremonies in Miami Beach, Fla.

Alina "Mumin" Salgado, 26, was sworn in along with 6,000 others in ceremonies, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

She is the daughter of Alina Fernandez, one of Castro's daughters in exile.

Salgado said she did not want to comment.

"I want to keep my life private and personal," she said. "I don't want my private life to come out in the newspaper."

Her mother, also a Miami resident, refused to comment after confirming her daughter did become a citizen at the ceremony Wednesday.

Fernandez fled Cuba with the use of a Spanish passport in 1993, but Alina, then 16, was left behind.

At a news conference shortly after arriving in the United States she urged Castro to allow her daughter to follow her. Alina was allowed to join her mother several days later.
