EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- In a rare case, a Canadian has been accused of failing to assist a man who lay dying after an accident.
Police in Edmonton, Alberta, charged 47-year-old Kenneth Millar, 47, with failing to offer assistance to 34-year-old Scott Lee, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Police said Millar and Lee were traveling along a highway when their truck rolled into a ditch. Millar was hurt, but Lee died on his way to the hospital.
The police, citing witnesses to the accident, alleged Millar wandered around trying to pick up things from the roadside instead of helping Lee.
Legal experts say it's highly unusual to charge someone with failure to assist, in part because it's difficult to prove a suspect knew someone was injured before trying to leave the accident scene. Police must also prove that he was driving the truck.
If convicted, Millar faces up to 10 years in jail.
