Ferdinand Marcos worker won't be deported

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A federal judge has temporarily prevented the deportation of a California nanny evacuated to the United States in 1986 with the entourage of Ferdinand Marcos.

Teresita Patingo Huppanda, 56, will be granted the chance to argue against her deportation by citing a 1986 U.S. press release indicating the former Philippine president's entourage would be welcome in the United States "indefinitely" as part of an agreement to promote a peaceful transition of government in the Asian nation, San Francisco federal district judge William Alsup ruled Wednesday, the Sacramento Bee reported.

When Marcos died in 1989, U.S. Immigration officials began to push for Huppanda's deportation, the Sacramento Bee reported. She currently owns a home in Rancho Cordova, works at Wal-Mart and has regularly paid income taxes.
