Kwasniewski would be joined in Kiev by European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana who is also due to help mediate talks Wednesday.

Former Polish president and Nobel prize winner Lech Walesa made a trip to Ukraine last week in an effort to help solve the crisis.

Ukraine's political system descended into chaos following presidential elections which were won, according to official results, by hardline Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich.

However, the democratic opposition, backed by the United States and the European Union, has alleged massive electoral fraud.

According to an exit poll by the Razumkov Center for Economic and Political Research pro-Western candidate Viktor Yushchenko easily won the election by 54 percent of the vote compared to 43 percent for Yanukovich. A parallel vote count conducted by the opposition produced a similar result.
