Rehnquist continues absence

WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who is being treated for thyroid cancer, will be absent from the bench this week, the U.S. Supreme Court said.

Rehnquist has been absent since his illness was announced in October.

But a court spokeswoman said this weekend the chief justice continues to participate in every case, reading the briefs filed by lawyers and the transcripts of arguments.

Rehnquist is expected to join in opinions if they are handed down this week.

The spokeswoman said Rehnquist is continuing to meet with his clerks and other court staff while working at home.

In October, the chief justice underwent a tracheotomy -- the cutting of a hole into his windpipe -- to ease the symptoms of his treatment. He continues to undergo radiation and chemotherapy, the court said.

There was no word on whether Rehnquist would attempt to return to the bench when argument continues next week.
