NEW YORK, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A former New York corrections officer charged with fatally shooting his two children might face a life sentence, the New York Post reported Saturday.
Everett George, a former Rikers Island correction officer, has been locked in Bellevue Hospital's psychiatric ward since Wednesday. Police allege George entered the Harlem apartment of his girlfriend, Taisha Middleton, Wednesday and fatally shot his 12-year-old son Dominic and his 1-year-old daughter Kristina.
Prosecutor George Vomvolakis said Middleton might have been next had the gun not jammed.
"This defendant, your honor, is facing life without the possibility of parole," the prosecutor told Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson during an arraignment at Bellevue Hospital.
The prosecutor said George had a prior arrest on domestic-violence charges.
