Ibero-Latin leaders want Falkland talks

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese leaders have called for a renewed dialogue on the dispute between Argentina and Britain over the Falkland Islands.

During the weekend Ibero-American summit in Costa Rica, leaders released a statement calling for the "governments of Argentina and Britain to resume as soon as possible negotiations aimed at achieving a swift solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas islands (Argentina's name for the Falklands)," Al Dia newspaper reported Monday.

Argentina and Britain warred over the islands in 1982, with Britain retaining control of the territory some 350 miles off the coast of southern Argentina.

Last year President Nestor Kirchner appealed to the United Nations to restart talks on the status of the islands.
