45 aid workers rescued from Darfur

AL-FASHIR, Sudan, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- An African Union helicopter rescued 45 aid workers, 30 from the Save the Children organization, amid renewed fighting in Sudan's Darfur region Monday.

The BBC reported the fighting occurred despite a recent African Union-backed agreement with the rebels to end the conflict.

The African Union said six civilians died in the fighting.

The aid workers were evacuated to al-Fashir, capital of northern Darfur, according to a Save the Children spokeswoman.

The renewed violence occurred as the United Nations planned to deploy 7,000 peacekeeping troops in Sudan.
