NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A high-ranking official Israeli team is undertaking a visit to Mauritania in a move to boost diplomatic relations established five years ago.

The team led by Shalom Kofein, director general of the Middle East and Africa desk at the Israeli foreign ministry, held talks Thursday with Mauritanian Health Minister Mohammed Amin Ould Salman on ways to expand cooperation in the health sector.

The Israeli team held similar talks Wednesday with Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohammed Fal Ould Bilal on upgrading cooperation in the political field.

Despite slow and lukewarm normalization of relations between the North African Arab country and the Jewish state, the Israeli team received a warm official welcome amid strong popular opposition and rejection.
